Ja hoor, daar gaat 'ie weer, zaaien en oogsten:

Boston Boemberts: geschiedenis.

RIA Novosti, 24 april 2013:

http://en.rian.ru/russia/20130425/18084 ... Putin.html

MOSCOW, April 25 (RIA Novosti) – Last week’s tragedy in Boston should prompt Russia and the United States to cooperate more closely in dealing with such threats, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during his televised question-and-answer session on Thursday.
“I just call for this tragedy to be an incentive for us to become closer in tackling common threats, with terrorism being one of the most important and dangerous of them. If indeed we combine our efforts, we won’t take such hits and sustain such losses,” he said.
he Russian president said he had always resented it when terrorists who committed “savage, bloody, appalling crimes on Russian territory were referred to in no other way but rebels, and were seldom or never called terrorists” by Western media and politicians.
“They received aid, information support, as well as financial and political [aid]. Sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly, but they always had it for their activities on Russian territory,” Putin said. “But we have always said that we should not just make statements about it being a common threat, we should take the matter into our hands and cooperate with each other more closely.”

The Associated Press cited two unnamed US officials as saying on Thursday that the Russian government had contacted the FBI and the CIA separately in 2011 with concerns about Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the two brothers the authorities suspect of being behind the twin blasts at the finish line of the Boston Marathon that killed three and injured about 200 on April 15.

The brothers have been identified as ethnic Chechens who lived in Dagestan, a violence-ridden republic in Russia’s North Caucasus region, and the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan before moving to the United States nearly a decade ago.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed during a shootout with police in the Boston suburb of Watertown on Friday. His brother Dzhokhar was apprehended hours later. He remains in a Boston hospital where he is being treated for injuries to his head, neck, legs and hand.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction, which could carry the death penalty.

WASHINGTON, April 24 (By Carl Schreck for RIA Novosti) – More than a decade after Russia offered staunch support to the United States following the 9/11 terror attacks, bilateral relations could receive another boost as US authorities investigate two brothers with ties to Russia’s turbulent North Caucasus region in connection with last week’s deadly Boston Marathon bombing, analysts and security experts said.
“Now that we ourselves have experienced terror that has a North Caucasus dimension, it certainly gives a chance to revive counterterrorism cooperation,” Angela Stent, director of the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies at Georgetown University, told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
US investigators say the April 15 attack was carried out by brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, two ethnic Chechens who lived in Dagestan, a violence-ridden republic in Russia’s North Caucasus region, and the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan before moving to the United States nearly a decade ago.
US President Barack Obama spoke by telephone last week with his Russian President Vladimir Putin, who “expressed his condolences on behalf of the Russian people” following the twin bombings, which killed three and wounded more than 200 others, the White House said in a statement.
The call echoes Putin’s decision to immediately reach out to President George W. Bush following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, becoming the first foreign leader to call the White House following the tragedy.
Putin proceeded to throw logistical, intelligence and moral support to US counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan in what was widely seen as his attempt to improve Moscow’s ties with Washington and earn greater credibility in the West for the Kremlin’s attempt to stamp out an insurgency in the mainly Muslim region of Chechnya in the North Caucasus.
US-Russia ties, however, proceeded to wither precipitously during Bush’s two terms in office as Washington and Moscow clashed over the US-led military incursion into Iraq, US plans to place elements of a missile defense system in Eastern Europe, the eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and US support for Western-looking governments in former Soviet republics like Ukraine and Georgia.
Relations between the two countries reached a nadir in August 2008, when the Russian military crushed the forces of US ally Georgia in a short war over the Moscow-backed region of South Ossetia, which is recognized as independent of Georgia by Russia and a handful of other nations.
Obama’s so-called “reset” policy with Moscow has secured agreements on arms control and counterterrorism, but ties have remained fraught since last fall over US allegations of Russian human rights abuses and Russia’s accusations of American meddling in its domestic affairs.
The Boston Marathon bombings offers the two countries a chance to reset cooperation in the field of counterterrorism, said Simon Saradzhyan, an expert on security and Russian politics at Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
But reports that Russian authorities alerted the Americans in 2011 about Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s possible attraction to radical

Islam also highlight how mistrust between the two countries can have deadly consequences, he added. “The fact that [the Russian reports] didn’t lead anywhere reveals a lack of trust,” Saradzhyan told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

“And if you don’t have trust, you can’t really build a lasting relationship in which neither side is suspicious that the other is secretly pushing some kind of hidden agenda.”
Fiona Hill, director of the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think tank, said this chasm in trust will be difficult to bridge given US concerns about Moscow’s methods in dealing with insurgents in the
North Caucasus and Russia’s view of Washington’s hypocrisy “given our own methods of dealing with terrorist suspects in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.”
“They have conducted targeted assassinations, we have conducted targeted assassinations,” Hill wrote in a recent essay for the cable news network MSNBC. “They have used car bombs and missiles, we use unmanned drones. We accuse them of abuses. They accuse us of the same abuses.”
Both sides are likely to approach any renewal of counterterrorism cooperation with a more realistic assessment of how partnership in this sphere can impact broader bilateral ties, Stent told RIA Novosti.
“Everyone’s expectations will be a little more moderate than after the Sept. 11 attacks, when there was this idea that this could lead to a qualitatively different US-Russian partnership,” she said.
But taken together with a recent visit to Moscow by Obama’s national security adviser, Tom Donilon, for talks on a range of issues, including missile defense and arms control, the tragedy in Boston could spur a modest rapprochement between the two sides, Stent added.
Broadening this basis for cooperation—primarily in the area of trade—could put US-Russia ties on even firmer footing, Saradzhyan said, adding that two planned meetings between Putin and Obama later this year also provide grounds for optimism that relations could improve.
But domestic political developments—such as the countries’ recent tit-for-tat blacklists of Russian and US officials in connection the US Magnitsky Act—could scuttle cooperation on counterterrorism and other areas, Saradzhyan added.
“We could see another renaissance, and then we could see another cooling off of relations,” he said. “We’ve seen this kind of roller coaster ride again and again.”

....But the most serious threat to the Games would appear to be (predictably) from Chechen militants. Russia's security services reported this May that they had found arms, including anti-aircraft missiles, in nearby notorious Abkhazia. The Federal Security
Service (FSB) said the weapons had been stockpiled for an assault on the Games by Chechen separatist leader Doku Umarov, who claimed responsibility for a 2011 attack on a Moscow airport and a 2010 bombing of the Russian capital's subway system. The FSB said Russia's old enemy Georgia was involved in the plot. The Georgians said the Russians were talking nonsense. But what is clear is that Chechen rebels at the 2014 Games would be sure to spoil the event for pretty much everyone....

The two Chechen immigrants apparently responsible for the terror attack on the Boston Marathon may never have had any contact with al Qaeda—or even a single member of al Qaeda—but they are likely soon to be lauded as “heroes” of the global jihad.

It is much too soon to come to any hard conclusions about the motives and intentions of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the alleged perpetrators, but it is not too soon to understand how al Qaeda and associated jihadists see the Chechen struggle against Russia in the context of their own ideology and narrative. Al Qaeda has long seen the Chechen struggle as part of the global war between Islam and its enemies. For the extremists who run al Qaeda and related movements, Russia’s actions in Chechnya are no different than Israeli actions in Gaza, French actions in Mali, or American actions in Afghanistan. All are allegedly part of a global conspiracy against Islam that ranges from the Caucasus to Kashmir to Bali.

In an audio message issued less than two weeks ago, Ayman Zawahiri, the Egyptian leader of al Qaeda and its chief ideologue, said the greatest enemies of Islam are the “biggest criminals in Washington, Moscow and Tel Aviv.” Thus Zawahiri lumped American, Russia and Israel together as the enemies of Muslims everywhere.

For Zawahiri and his predecessor, Osama bin Laden, this argument that Islam is under siege by a global conspiracy is nothing new. Zawahiri and bin Laden began their careers fighting in Afghanistan against the Russians. The Chechen struggle against Russia is for them only a continuation of that war and indeed of the Central Asian and Caucasian Muslims’ struggle against Tsars, Commissars, and now Putin that goes back to the 18th century. Zawahiri himself was briefly arrested in Russia in the mid-1990s, apparently while he was actively assisting the Chechen insurgency. Bin Laden encouraged Saudis to go to Chechnya to fight Russia.

For angry young Muslims radicalized by what has happened in their own homeland, the al Qaeda narrative provides an explanation for a bigger struggle that involves not just their own country but the entire Muslim world. At the same time it also gives them more targets for their anger. If an angry Chechen cannot attack a Russian target, then a soft target in his own city in America or Europe—a marathon or another public space—is an easier target.

Al Qaeda has been encouraging just such attacks for the last several years. The Yemeni American Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed by a drone strike in 2011, articulated it in the English language web magazine he helped create, called Inspire, that also printed simple manuals for how to build a bomb in your family kitchen. The attempt by a Pakistani American, Faysal Shahzad, to blow up a car bomb in Times Square in May 2010 (which was foiled by NYPD at the last minute), was an early example of this kind of small but devastating attack. Shahzad has now become a hero in the al Qaeda narrative even though he failed in his attempt.

Whether al Qaeda had any role – direct or indirect by the internet – in the radicalization of these two men, it is likely to revel in the results of their attacks in Boston. While the attack was nowhere near the magnitude of 9/11, it has consumed the American
media and political scene for almost a week so far, led to the unprecedented lockdown of an entire American city, and sent the White House itself into enhanced security.

Americans have every right to ask: Why do they hate us? Americans are not responsible for the ugly civil war in Chechnya, or the horrendous terrorist attacks carried out by Chechen terrorists in Moscow and other Russian cities. Unfortunately the global jihadist movement and its violent ideology doesn’t see the differences that we rightly see. For according to the narrative of Ayman Zawahiri, Islam is under attack from every direction, and the jihadist answer is to strike back in New York, Madrid, London, Toulouse—and now Boston.

-Rail-plot

On April 22, the RCMP announced the arrest of two men in connection with a plot to attack a Via Rail passenger train in the Toronto area. Raed Jaser of Toronto and Chiheb Esseghaier of Montreal face multiple terrorism-related charges. Canadian authorities allege that the plot was supported by al-Qaeda elements in Iran, making it the first known al-Qaeda plan or attack in Canada.

A Canadian al-Qaeda plot from Iran? Not impossible, but not very likely.

The revelation of an alleged plot to attack the Canada-U.S. train system by a small cell somehow connected to al-Qaeda’s presence in Iran has sparked interest in the relationship between the Sunni Muslim terror group and the Shia Muslim Iranian government. There is no doubt that al-Qaeda has a presence in Iran – but how it relates to the Tehran regime has been murky for years.

The relationship between al-Qaeda and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been shrouded in mystery and secrecy for years. Al-Qaeda operatives have transited through Iran regularly before and after Sept. 11, 2001, and some found sanctuary in Iran after fleeing Afghanistan in late 2001, although the circumstances of their status in Iran was always unclear. But the hints of occasional operational co-operation between al-Qaeda and Tehran are mostly outweighed by the very considerable and public evidence of the deep animosity between Sunni-extremist al-Qaeda and Shia-extremist Iran.

Antipathy for each other is at the root of their ideologies and narratives. It has been most visible in their competition for influence in Iraq, and now also in Syria.

The Sept. 11 plot is a good place to start if we wish to understand the mystery. The 9/11 Commission report concluded that there was evidence of contacts between Osama bin Laden and Iran (through its Lebanese Hezbollah ally) dating back to his years in Khartoum in the mid 1990s.

Mr. bin Laden may even have met with the infamous Hezbollah terrorist Imad Mughniyah back then to share terror tricks. Three of the 9/11 hijackers reportedly travelled from Saudi Arabia to Beirut, then on to Iran and into Afghanistan on a flight with an associate of a senior Hezbollah official, according to the commission’s report. Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and Ramzi Binalshibh (the two captured al-Qaeda operatives who masterminded the 9/11 attack) confirmed that eight to 10 of the 9/11 hijackers at one time or another between October, 2000, and February, 2001, transited through Iran on their way to or from Afghanistan for training purposes, taking advantage of the Iranian practice of not stamping Saudi Arabian passports.

The bottom line of the 9/11 report is unequivocal, however: It reports that both Mr. Mohammad and Mr. Binalshibh categorically denied any relationship between the hijackers and Hezbollah. On Iran, the commission concludes: “We have found no evidence that Iran or Hezbollah was aware of the planning for what later became the 9/11 attack.” So, at most, this was passive assistance, not actual co-plotting.

After the fall of the Taliban in Kabul, some al-Qaeda members, including bin Laden family members, fled to Iran – though most went into Pakistan. Many have since left Iran, including one of Osama bin Laden’s wives who ended up with him in his final hideout in Pakistan. This al-Qaeda presence may have been loosely under the supervision of the Iranian regime at times. On the other side of the ledger, the animosity between Iran and al-Qaeda is public and abundantly clear. For al-Qaeda and its allies such as the Afghan Taliban, Shiites are not true Muslims and should be treated at best as outcasts if not apostates.

Al-Qaeda’s first leader in Iraq, Abu Musaib al Zarqawi, was notoriously vicious in his hatred for the Shia. Al-Qaeda in Iraq still regularly targets Shiite innocents. At the same time, however, al-Qaeda operatives regularly cross Iran to travel between Iraq and Pakistan, some probably unknown to Iranian authorities and others probably tolerated with a blind eye.

Now, in Syria, al-Qaeda is backing the Sunni majority in its civil war with the Shia Alawite minority that backs President Bashar al-Assad. This month Ayman Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s successor, attacked Iran in an audio message for backing Mr. Assad and for allegedly secretly colluding with America against the global jihad movement.

Despite their animosity, al-Qaeda and Iran can probably find places to quietly co-operate – if only passively. America and its allies are on a collision course with Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program. From Tehran’s perspective, the war has already begun. Iran’s nuclear scientists are being assassinated, its nuclear and missile facilities blown up and its computers hacked. As the confrontation worsens, Iran may look for indirect ways to fight back.

Tehran might not know that al-Qaeda figures in Iran were in touch with an alleged cell in Canada at all – or it might allow al-Qaeda greater use of Iranian territory for communicating with a cell in Canada as a simple way to harass Washington and Ottawa without much risk. “Just turn a blind eye” co-operation is very hard to detect by Western intelligence agencies and almost impossible to prove.

In turn, as the United States puts pressure on al-Qaeda’s safe haven in Pakistan, Mr. Zawahiri and his terrorists are likely to start looking for alternative sanctuaries. Iran is right next door. In short, al-Qaeda and Iran still hate each other, but they could find common cause to fight America and Canada.

Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer and presidential advisor on Middle East and South Asia issues, is senior fellow and director of the Brookings Institution Intelligence Project. He is the author of The Search for Al Qaeda (2008) and Deadly Embrace: Pakistan, America and the Future of Global Jihad (2011).

Bombs away (10)
zondag 28 april 2013

Yeah. Right.

Stay tuned.

Boston bombing: citizen video-analysts create major problems for controlled media

by Jon Rappoport

April 23, 2013

You’re a reporter for a TV news outlet.

You’ve become aware of a disturbing trend. Thousands of private citizens are now analyzing video and photographs of crime scenes and posting their findings.

They’re hounds, and they can’t be stopped. They’re looking at news footage, casual video, photos, and what they’re coming up with challenges the official story lines your network pushes.

Some of their analysis is ridiculous, but some of it isn’t.

Bombs away (11)
dinsdag 30 april 2013

The show must go on. Fire away. Stay tuned.

Bombs away (12)
donderdag 2 mei 2013

Forget it.

Pannen laten vliegen of zo.

TSA Now Confiscating Pressure Cookers?
Satirical suggestion of banning cookers after Boston bombs becomes reality

In the aftermath of the Boston bombings, where pressure cookers were used to house explosives, many satirically suggested that the government would immediately react by banning the household devices. Now it seems that may actually be happening.

Two different reports in the last week have suggested that the TSA has confiscated pressure cookers from people traveling through airports.

One of the incidents occurred at Hilo airport and involved a passenger traveling from Hilo to Honolulu on a Hawaiian Airlines flight. TSA screeners called the FBI after discovering what “appeared to be a modified pressure cooker”.

The FBI said that the passenger was detained for questioning, and that items in his luggage were seized. Although initial reports suggested that bomb making literature and batteries were also found, this has not been corroborated. Indeed, the FBI stated that the man did not have any dangerous materials, was not arrested, and that he was released.

“The FBI does not believe that this incident poses any imminent threat to civil aviation based on our limited investigation thus far,” a written statement said.

In another incident on Saturday, reported by the Detroit Free Press, a Saudi man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport while traveling with a pressure cooker. Customs officials reportedly found the cooker in the man’s luggage after noticing that he had a page missing from his passport, which he could not explain.

Reports suggested that documents filed in court claimed that the man lied about the reason for having the pressure cooker, first saying that he believed they were not sold in America, then claiming that his nephew, a student in Ohio whom he was visiting, had bought one, but it had broken.

After officials investigated, they found that the man’s nephew does use a pressure cooker, and that he wanted to cook lamb, but was not happy with cookers he had bought in the U.S.

The FBI declined to comment on whether or not pressure cookers are now among the items prohibited by from air travel. They are not listed on the TSA’s website as being prohibited.

The panic surrounding pressure cookers was not just confined to airports. Last week, another Saudi student in Michigan told reporters that his home was surrounded by FBI agents after neighbours reported seeing him carrying around a pressure cooker.

Following questioning by the agents, it turned out that the man was cooking rice and taking it to a friend’s home. An FBI agent reportedly told the man that “You need to be more careful moving around with such things.”

Yeah, cooked rice can be deadly.

All these incidents highlight the rampant fear that is being instilled in Americans to the point where they will literally call the FBI if they see a brown person doing something they find suspicious.

It also highlights the fact that security theater does noting to actually keep anyone safe, but it does instill paranoia and panic.

Check out the video below of a student posing as an activist attempting to gain signatures for a petition to ban pressure cookers in order to keep everyone safe. She tells other students that pressure cookers, “were actually used in the Boston bombing, so we’re just trying to limit who can get them,” adding that her organization is, “just trying to keep people safe by reducing the number of them.”

It would be hilarious, but when so many people unquestioningly sign their name it simply becomes frightening.
