Osama Bin Laden diary 'planned attacks' - US officials
12 May 2011 Last updated at 05:01 GMT

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13370524

Osama Bin Laden calculated how many Americans would have to be killed to force the US from the Middle East, US officials say, citing his seized journal and other files.

The al-Qaeda leader reportedly wrote that smaller attacks since 9/11 were not having the desired impact.

Bin Laden also urged his followers to strike smaller cities and hit trains.

The documents were seized during last week's US raid on Bin Laden's hideout in Pakistan in which he was killed.

The US officials, who spoke to the Associated Press news agency on condition of anonymity, say Bin Laden's personal, handwritten diary and computer files reveal his hand in every recent major al-Qaeda threat.

Committees to see photos

These included plots in Europe last year that saw travellers and embassies on alert, according to the two officials.

The al-Qaeda leader envisaged attacks being staged on significant dates, such as America's 4 July Independence Day and the 10th anniversary of the attacks of 11 September 2001.

He wrote that other American cities such as Los Angeles should be considered for targeting, not just New York.

In his writings, US officials say that Bin Laden wondered how many American deaths it would take to lead Washington to reconsider its policies on the Middle East.

The al-Qaeda leader is said to have concluded that only a body count of thousands, like that of the 9/11 attacks, would be enough.

Intelligence agents are continuing to analyse the documents - said to be around 100 flash drives and five computers - seized in the 2 May raid in Abbottabad by the US Navy Seals.

Bin Laden's communications are believed to have been in missives sent via the flash drives, as his compound had no telephone or internet access.

The CIA meanwhile has said it plans to allow members of four US congressional committees to view images of Bin Laden's body.

Until now, the US authorities had been saying the pictures of Bin Laden - who was shot in the face and chest - were too gruesome to be made public and could inflame sentiment.

On Wednesday, Bin Laden's sons criticised the US for carrying out his "arbitrary killing".

A statement given to the New York Times newspaper said the family wanted to know why the al-Qaeda leader had not been captured alive.

Another statement appeared on a jihadist website saying the burial of Bin Laden at sea "demeans and humiliates his family".

US officials have said that while Bin Laden was unarmed he had given no indication to the US troops that he wanted to surrender.

Attorney General Eric Holder has said that the killing was lawful and "an act of national self-defence".

Osama's diary,

Courier came today: secret messages from al-Qaida, more AA batteries for the remote, copy of Newsweek, Ikea catalogue (they send me two, every time, even though I have never ordered anything) and a pirate DVD of Finding Nemo. Watched it, laughed a lot, condemned it afterwards.

Tonight is book-club night, and everyone in the compound is angry with me because I have picked the Qur'an again. They all say they have read it before. I say, but have you memorised it? They say, you always hijack the discussion! This is true, I suppose. Abu says it is his turn to pick. No way, I tell him. Never again, not after Angela's Ashes.

Bin Laden hideout had extensive porn stash

We already know that Osama bin Laden kept journals and watched television reports about himself while hiding in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan before he was killed in U.S. military operation May 1. It turns out he might have been building his porn collection, too.

A source confirms to CBS News that pornography was found in the computer files seized from Osama bin Laden's compound. The source says "inappropriate still images" were found--some of which showed couples engaged in sex acts.

The pornography "consists of modern, electronically recorded video," Reuters first reported Friday, citing current and former officials.

Special section: The killing of Osama bin Laden

But the officials who spoke to Reuters said they did not know where in the compound the materials were found. They might not have belonged to -- or been viewed by -- bin Laden himself.

Earlier Friday, CBS News has learned that CIA officers in Pakistan have met with three widows of Osama bin Laden.

The meeting lasted approximately 30 minutes and Pakistani intelligence officials were present.

Sources tell CBS News the CIA did not get a lot of information from them, but there may be further meetings.

The eldest of the three widows served as a spokeswoman. Much of the session was reportedly taken up with translation.

Obama waarschuwt terroristen

Afbeelding

Why China Needed Bin Laden

September 11 distracted the United States from China’s rise. Without the attacks, China wouldn’t be where it is today, says Frank Ching.

After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, it was common to hear that ‘everything had changed.’ Now, as the dust settles following the killing of Osama bin Laden, it seems a good time to take stock and see just how much is really different.

Yet when one does, it quickly becomes clear that while from the United States’ standpoint, things have gotten worse, from China’s point of view the attacks were a blessing in disguise.

With the demise of the Soviet Union, the George W. Bush administration came to office in January 2001 seeing China as the next enemy. The new US government’s intention was to strengthen ties with US allies in Asia, especially Japan and South Korea, and to bolster Taiwan’s political and military position.

Bush himself had already repudiated the Clinton administration’s policy of forging a strategic partnership with China, calling Beijing a strategic competitor, rather than a strategic partner.

When Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage set off on his first Asian trip to discuss US plans for building and deploying missile defense systems, he went to Japan, South Korea and India, conspicuously skipping China. The task of visiting China instead fell to the lower-ranking James Kelly, Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

But it was the collision of a US EP-3 reconnaissance aircraft and a Chinese fighter jet—and the loss of the Chinese flier’s life—on April 1, 2001 that precipitated a crisis that took Sino-US relations to a new low.

The US plane made an emergency landing on Hainan Island and the crew of 24 was detained. In the United States, yellow ribbons were tied to trees, recalling the holding of American hostages in Iran. The situation deteriorated badly enough for Kelly to declare to the House International Relations Committee that ‘recent events have called into question where we stand in our relationship with China and where we want to go.’

Ten days after the crew was returned, Bush decided on a major arms deal for Taiwan, offering several billion dollars worth of equipment—the biggest arms package since his father decided in 1992 to sell F-16s to Taiwan. The new package included diesel-powered submarines, which the United States had never previously offered to Taiwan.

China lodged a strong protest against the sale. But days later, Bush, marking his 100th day in office, said in an interview on Good Morning America that the United States would do ‘whatever it took to help Taiwan defend herself’ against China—a pledge that went even further than the Taiwan Relations Act.

The following month, the Bush administration offered a transit visa to the president of Taiwan, Chen Shui-bian, which far exceeded the limited terms provided by the Clinton administration. Indeed, Chen was allowed to transit the United States both on his way to Latin America and while returning to Taiwan, stopping first in New York for two nights in May and then transiting Houston for a night in June.

While the Clinton administration had tried to keep such visits as unofficial as possible, the Bush administration encouraged members of Congress to meet with the Taiwanese leader on the grounds that meetings with foreign leaders help in ‘advancing our national interests.’

Diver Bill Warren plans mission to recover Osama bin Laden's body

Deep-sea treasure-hunter Bill Warren is to embark on an underwater mission to the murky depths of the north Arabian Sea to recover the body of Osama bin Laden – so he can deliver photographic proof that the terror leader is dead.

Afbeelding

The 59-year-old Californian diver will scour the sea bed to find the corpse.

Mr Warren, who has discovered more than 200 undersea wrecks, said: 'I'm doing it because I am a patriotic American who wants to know the truth. I do it for the world.'

Bin Laden was killed in his hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan in the early hours of May 2 in a raid by a team of US Navy SEALs who said they later buried his body at sea from the USS Carl Vinson warship.

The White House said it would not release graphic images of bin Laden's corpse and no details of the location of the corpse in the North Arabian Sea have been released.

'The Obama administration should have released the photo, like we did with Billy the Kid, or (John) Dillinger, or even Saddam Hussein,' Mr Warren also told TMZ.

'I have a Russian girlfriend, and she tells me that over there, in intelligence circles, they don't believe bin Laden's really dead,' he added.

He plans on using hi-tech equipment, a ship and a submarine in the search, which he says will cost about $400,000 in total.

He hopes to locate and recover Bin Laden's body before taking pictures and recordings of the corpse, and doing a DNA test.

U.S. officials welcomed visitors last month to view the USS Carl Vinson, which became famous as the dead Al Qaeda leader’s last resting place before his burial at sea.

According to his website, Mr Warren began diving commercially in 1972 and has run salvage companies since then.

Pakistan 'gave China access' to downed US helicopter

Financial Times reports that Chinese military engineers took photographs and samples from wreckage in Abbottabad
Pakistan let Chinese military engineers photograph and take samples from the US helicopter that was left behind when American special forces killed Osama bin Laden, it has been reported.

If true, the claim would underline the deterioration in US-Pakistani relations since the raid in May in Abbottabad, outside Islamabad in which the al-Qaida leader died.

Members of the Chinese military were allowed to survey the wreckage of the hi-tech helicopter and take samples of its "stealth" skin, which allowed it to enter Pakistan undetected by radar, the Financial Times reported, quoting US sources.

"The US now has information that Pakistan, particularly the ISI [Pakistan's intelligence agency], gave access to the Chinese military to the downed helicopter in Abbottabad," an intelligence figure was quoted as saying.

The FT said it had been told by figures close to the White House and the CIA that Pakistan had given the Chinese access to the helicopter.

It quoted a figure close to the CIA as saying: "We had explicitly asked the Pakistanis in the immediate aftermath of the raid not to let anyone have access to the damaged remains of the helicopter."

There was no immediate comment from the White House. A spokesperson for the US state department said that it was aware of the report.

Amid a worsening relationship between the two countries since the unilateral US raid to kill Bin Laden, the Pakistani military declared last month that it did not need US military aid after the White House confirmed that it would withhold some $800m (£492m) in assistance to the country's armed forces.

Pakistan in turn has expelled US military trainers, limited the ability of US diplomats and other officials to get visas, and restricted CIA operations on its territory.

John Kerry, chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, went to Pakistan weeks after the raid in a bid to secure the return of the wreckage.

The US fears that cutting-edge military technology in the tail of the helicopter, abandoned after US forces blew up the rest of the craft, could be reverse-engineered in China.

Pakistan said it would return the wreckage as a tentative first step towards hitting the reset button in the two countries' badly damaged relations.
