Peru says 5,000 birds, nearly 900 dolphins dead

The Peruvian government said Wednesday that 5,000 birds, mostly pelicans, and nearly 900 dolphins have died off the country’s northern coast, possibly due to rising temperatures in Pacific waters.

Afbeelding

The country’s northern beaches were earlier this week declared off-limits as scientists scrambled to pin down what was causing such a massive toll, with non-government organizations blaming oil exploration work.

But Peru’s deputy environment minister Gabriel Quijandria, disputed this and said warming waters, which disturbs species’ food supplies, was a possible cause.

He said that although tests conducted on 877 dolphins found dead on the coast had not been completed, contamination from heavy metals or the presence of bacterial infections was not responsible.

It is probable that the phenomenon "will extend to other coastal areas," Quijandria said, noting that there could be a resulting increase in the numbers of birds and other sea life killed.

The South American nation’s health ministry declared an alert at the weekend, urging the public to stay away from the beaches around Lima and on the northern coast until the cause of death of marine life is known.

One non-government conservation organization, known as ORCA, has blamed the dolphin deaths on oil exploration activities in the area, which it claims produces noises which are having an acoustic impact on the mammals.

A representative from the group, Carlos Yaipen, said Wednesday it had tested 30 dead specimens and found broken ears and damaged organs consistent with the victims suffering "the bends," also known as decompression sickness.

Weather expert Abraham Levy told AFP on Tuesday that the warming of the Pacific waters due to El Nino could be to blame.

The sardine apocalypse: Mystery of 200-ton shoal of dead fish that washed up at port, turned the sea red and created a HUGE stink

An entire port town in Japan has been left reeking of dead fish after nearly 200 tons of stinky sardines washed up on its shore.

The massive shoal started washing up at the fishing port of Ohara, on Japan's East-facing North Pacific Ocean coast, on June 3 and quickly turned the sea red.

Since then the bizarre phenomenon gone has rapidly got out of control.
There are now so many dead fish that locals in the town in Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture, are having to truck the rotting remains to landfills. And yet still more dead sardines keep washing up on shore.

Reports suggested that locals are not only finding the sight disturbing, but the huge amount of dead fish has created a smell that's becoming unbearable.

Nog veel meer diersoorten Amazonegebied sterven uit\

Afbeelding

US Newspaper reports on link between birth defects and eating radioactive contamination — One piece of contaminated food may deliver radiation of hundreds of x-rays
Published: July 16th, 2012 at 1:36 pm ET
By ENENews

Title: Geneticist charts effects of nuclear disasters
Source: Press-Register
Author: Sally Pearsall Ericson
Date: July 16, 2012, 7:15 AM
Dr. Wladimir Wertelecki, a physician, geneticist and professor, could rest on the laurels of a prestigious career with international accomplishments.

...

According to the British medical journal Lancet (www.thelancet.com) of April 24, 2010, the results of Wertelecki’s child development investigations have re-ignited a controversy among international agencies and scientists concerning the impact of internalized radiation through contaminated food on birth defects.

...

At a recent scientific colloquium at the University of South Alabama, Wertelecki pointed out two main lessons learned from the Chernobyl and the Fukushima-Daiichi disasters:

“It is not the scale of a nuclear accident itself that makes a human disaster it is the response by officials afterward and the public panic produced. The public should not be treated as idiots and told only the ‘good half’ of the story, as is often done by official agencies. People have the right to know, the need to believe those who are in charge.”

Wertelecki’s investigations in Ukraine show elevated population rates of certain types of birth defects, mostly of the brain and spinal cord, according to his 2010 article in “Pediatrics,” the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics (www.pediatrics.org/cgi/content/full/125/4/e836). However, the geneticist noted, statistics illuminate realities but cannot prove causes.

...

The impact of the bombs was external radiation, which was intense but short-lived, said the physician. The impact of Chernobyl and Fukushima-Daiichi is ongoing and radiation still in the environment is inhaled or swallowed, leading to accumulation in the body. One mushroom eaten in affected areas may deliver as much radiation as hundreds of chest x-rays, he concluded.

This accumulation is most worrisome for pregnant women. Radiation is an agent that can not only cause birth defects, but alter the human genome with long-term effects on future generations, he stated.

...

A recent review of the results of these studies warranted additional funding from the NIH to expand ongoing investigations. Among his aims, said Wertelecki, is the expansion of the current international research consortium of scientists, “because no single scientific or humanitarian discipline alone can address the complex issues arising from the Chernobyl and Fukushima-Daiichi disasters.”

...

He will soon address other groups in Baltimore, Glasgow, Tokyo, Kyoto and Budapest.
Wertelecki is the former chairman of the Medical Genetics Department at the University of South Alabama from 1974 until 2010, and continues his work along with child development research teams from California, SUNY, Indiana and Emory Universities

Rain of birds in Russia

In Russia the abnormal tendency of death of birds is observed..... any birds die.... pigeons, seagulls, falcons, eagles, sparrows, titmouses... in the cities yard keepers complain of daily falling of birds.... the yard keeper cleans on 3... 6 dead birds during cleaning daily....
Scientists of Russia suspected bird's viruses..... But even on Kamchatka find dead birds. These bird's groups practically don't contact and have absolutely other habitat.... but they too die...

Strange anomaly is observed for the first time in Russia... Many consider it as a harbinger of the future epoch-making events

I think it is necessary to fix scientific sensors for birds... which perish more others...
To forbid crops of gene updatings of products...

MASS BIRD DIE-OFF: Up to 300 Birds Mysteriously Fall From The Sky In Seymour, Tennessee?!

December 31, 2012 - UNITED STATES - Residents and those passing by near Dogwood Hills subdivision on Boyd Creek Highway Sunday afternoon were met with an unusual scene. Dozens of dead birds littered the highway and surrounding fields after falling from the sky. Sgt. Robert Stoffle of the Sevier County Sheriff's Department said a call about the birds came in around 1:15 p.m.

Afbeelding

He said a witness reported seeing the birds in flight before turning back around to see them on the ground. "It covered one lane of traffic," Stoffle said of the bodies of the birds. Estimates of the number of birds varied from between 30 and 60 up to 300. They appeared to be starlings.

Afbeelding

While the vast majority of the birds were dead by the time The Mountain Press photographer arrived, several were still alive, convulsing and flopping their wings on the ground. A count of the birds on the scene stopped at around 50, when not even half of the visible birds were tallied. Perhaps dozens more were scattered in a nearby field, which was flooded from the recent rainfall. As far as 60 yards from the main site of the birds, individual starlings were found.

A local resident, who didn't want to be named, said he was quite shocked to see the large group of dead and dying birds on the road. "I was (driving) to the house ... and I see a couple of kids standing in the road. I'm like, 'what are these kids doing in the road?' "When we get closer, next thing you know, there's birds everywhere and they were all dead. It was disgusting. It was really amazing.

That end-of-the-world was supposed to have been coming and stuff, so everybody was like, 'oh, no,'" he said, laughing. "When I first came upon it, when the kids were kicking them out of the road, there had to be 300 birds there, at least. It was crazy. There's some even in the field and the water and stuff, too, it's crazy.

“Manatees Dying in Droves on Both Coasts of Florida” — Deaths of pelicans, turtles, dolphins also increasing — “Scientists fear this is the beginning of a devastating ecosystem collapse”

Wired: Manatees Dying in Droves on Both Coasts of Florida [...] Large numbers of manatees are dying on both coasts of Florida [...] In the southwest, a persistent red tide in the Gulf of Mexico has killed nearly 200 manatees this year. [...] In the east, near Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic Ocean, manatees are also dying. But there the cause is unknown. “There are indications of the animals being otherwise completely healthy — but having died of shock and drowning,” said marine mammal biologist Ann Spellman, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the state agency tasked with the investigation. [...]

Tampa Bay Times: Even as a Red Tide algae bloom is wiping out a record number of manatees in southwest Florida, a mysterious ailment is killing dozens more manatees on the state’s east coast. So far, state biologists have been unable to pinpoint the cause. [...] There is no Red Tide bloom on the east coast, and the winter has not been cold enough to kill manatees. [...] Last week they announced that, since the start of 2013, more than 100 brown pelicans have been found dead in that same area of Brevard County. [...] Officials said one of the manatees is a calf suffering from cold stress and had cold-water lesions all over its body. [...]

Environmental Protection: At the [156-mile long] Indian River Lagoon in Florida, several manatees and pelicans have been found dead, most likely due to the algae blooms that are quickly invading the area. With the deaths of these animals, scientists fear this is the beginning of a devastating ecosystem collapse. [...] Investigators believe that manatees are eating gracilaria, a red-colored alga, because of the seagrass shortage and because the dead manatees’ stomachs are full of it. Gracilaria isn’t known to be toxic, but scientists are trying to find whether some type of toxin is at work. [...] “Because of what’s going on with manatees, we’re on alert,” Megan Stolen, a scientist at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, said, according to Spear’s article, which said the institute documented five dolphin deaths in February, up from the month’s average of 2.3 deaths. [...]

WBBH: [...] Red tide is also now the suspected cause of death of sea turtles in Southwest Florida. So far this year, 13 dead sea turtles have been reported dead. That’s compared to just 2 sea turtle deaths at this time last year. [...] Barnacles covered her shell and she seemed underweight; but researchers we spoke with say this many sea turtles shouldn’t be dying. “When I get that call, I just say, ‘Oh no not another one.’ [...] said Eve Haverfield, with Turtle Time Inc. [...]

Sun-Sentinel: [...] In just the first three months of this year, 409 manatees died in Florida waters, compared with 115 in the same period last year. The total number of deaths last year in Florida was 392. [...]

TV: Dead dolphin spike in Louisiana, Mississippi — “We have been advised not to discuss our findings” — Mostly babies washing up (VIDEO)

Angela Hill, Anchor: [...] Now experts say we’re seeing an unusual spike in dead dolphins washing up in both Louisiana and Mississippi. [...]

Dr. Moby Solangi, executive director of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport: Yes, we have seen a spike in dolphin strandings. [...]

Maya Rodriguez, Reporter: Since the start of this year strandings have been climbing, with 29 in Louisiana and 23 in Mississippi so far.

Solangi: The unusual part in Mississippi is that 18 of the 23 are baby dolphins. [...]

Rodriguez: Answers are tough to come by. Dr. Solangi said because of the ongoing investigation and litigation involving the BP oil spill, they can’t share their findings.

Solangi: We have been advised not to discuss our findings or any results from our necropsies or analysis [...]
