Leest U even mee...???

Strong earthquakes are setting off a powerful volcanic eruption in Eritrea (based on satellite images)

May we ask our Eritrean and/or Ethiopian readers to tell us what exactly is going on here by filling in the form below.

UPDATE 22:35 UTC : This will be a very special volcano eruption because we expect that the eruption comes from the Dubbi volcano who had it’s latest recorded activity in 1861.

UPDATE 22:35 UTC : The following satellite picture clearly indicates that an eruption is going on in the area. Look at the upper right quarter. A point will gradually grow to a major cloud, which means that based on the scale the eruption is very huge.

Click here for the animated cloud cover in Ethiopia / Eritrea

We do appreciate the person from the Netherlands and a few other people immediately afterwards who traced this satellite picture. Satellite pictures courtesy http://www.sat24.com.

A massive volcanic eruption has taken place in Eritrea Sunday June 11 2011.

The eruption in Eritrea could be the biggest volcanic event in Africa for hundreds of years.

The volcanic eruption occurred as a series of earthquakes rattled the region in north-east Africa.

Reports said the massive eruption was of the Nabro volcano in the Afambo, Eritrea area.

The US Geological Servery reported several moderate earthquakes around magnitude 5 hit in the late afternoon and evening of Sunday June 12 2011 in the region.

Satellite imagery shows a massive ash cloud spewing into the atmosphere over 1,000 kilometers in a westerly direction toward Sudan in just a few hours.

Witnesses in Khartoum said the ash cloud had reached the city Monday morning.

Web site Earthquake-report.com reported that the eruption most likely took place at the Nabro Volcano, although it was still to be confirmed as scientists and other officials had yet to reach the isolated area.

Other reports said the volcano was actually the Dubbi volcano. The last known activity of the Dubbi volcano was in 1861. In 1400 the Dubbi volcano spewed lava that reached the Red Sea.

The Nabro volcano has no record of erupting in recent history.

EDIT...:

Jaaaaa!

Vulkaan in Eritrea uitgebarsten

Eritrea Nabro volcano activity : Impressive NASA High Definition picture of the eruption of the Nabro volcano

Last update: June 16, 2011 at 6:32 pm by By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell 126 Comments

Earthquake / Eruption summary : During the late afternoon and evening of June 12 2011, a series of moderate earthquakes struck the Afambo, Eritrea area. The moderate earthquakes were followed by 2 strong 5.7 earthquakes. Based on the earthquake pattern and the locations of the epicenter, volcano activity seemed imminent. Our very extensive report is also the work of many of our readers who gave a lot of input. This proves that together, we can beat a lot of information services, especially in developing countries.
Our video reporter / assembler Robert Speta has made a video based on the content of this article for those who do not like to read. Click here to watch it in our “Quake-TV.org” subsite.

UPDATE 16/06 – 18:30 UTC : Ministry of Information of Eritrea press release:
Assab, June 16, 2011- The inhabitants of Afambo, Nebro and Sireru have disclosed that they have been moved to a safer location. Pointing out that there were occasional quakes in their areas, the inhabitants thanked the government for the fast relocation after the eruption, as a result of which there were no casualities.
It is to be recalled that the eruption of June 12th around the areas of Afambo, Nebro and Sireru released large quantities of dust and smoke and the quake of 5.7 Richter it caused was felt in our region.

UPDATE 16/06 – 18:13 UTC : Impressive picture of the eruption of the Nabro volcano in high-resolution, natural-color as recorded by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite on June 14, 2011. We also give you here the full text of the NASA Earth Observatory :
This high-resolution, natural-color satellite image shows details of the roiling plume of Eritrea’s Nabro Volcano. The thick plume obscures the site of the eruption, and most of Nabro’s 8-kilometer (5-mile) wide caldera. The bright white color of the plume indicates it contains a large amount of water vapor, with a slight blue tinge that hints at the presence of sulfur dioxide. Measurements from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) aboard the European Space Agency’s MetOp-A satellite confirm sulfur dioxide from the plume over Northeast Africa and the Middle East.

UPDATE 16/06 – 17:35 UTC : OUT OF SERVICE FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS We are sorry that some of you got empty pages for a couple of hours. Due to a server issue we could not reach you any more :( . It is fixed now and hopefully everything remains as it was before.
We know that this page becomes very long, but the main reason for keeping it this way, is that there is a relation in between many updates and images. The page is loading relatively quick here. If you should have problems with it, please let us know.

UPDATE 16/06 – 13:56 UTC : Press release from : Nevsun Resources Ltd. is pleased to report that the earthquakes and associated volcanic eruption in Eritrea have had no impact on operations at the Bisha mine and management does not expect any future material impact to operations. The volcano is over 300 km south and east from the Bisha site. There is no direct impact from the eruption or associated earthquakes on operations. The ash plume may periodically affect international air service to Asmara however this will not interrupt operations. (ER: Nevsun Resources is low cost gold producer active in its Bisha Mine in Eritrea)

UPDATE 16/06 – 13:40 UTC : The Djibouti based “Observatoire Géophysique Arta” has published far higher Magnitude values than earlier reported by EMSC. The Magnitudes they have listed were : 3.9, 4.4 and 4.5. As their Seismograph stations are very close to the Nabro volcano, we do consider these values as “to be trusted”

UPDATE 16/06 – 13:13 UTC : The picture of the ash cloud proves that the cloud is far more extending to the North West than this morning. The front of the present cloud has almost reached Khartoum in Sudan. Compare this picture with a similar picture we published at 08:35 this morning.
Interesting to know is also that the present cloud only contains ash close to the volcano. The extended plume contains mainly SO2 and Ice.

UPDATE 16/06 – 10:55 UTC : A number of 3 new Magnitude 3 earthquakes did sett off a new stronger eruption from the Nabro volcano. The first of the 3 shocks occurred at 01:30 AM UTC (Thanks to Dr Franzky for mentioning)

Ash cloud on June 16 at 7 AM UTC

UPDATE 16/06 – 08:35 UTC : Most airlines have stopped serving some East Africa destinations. The following airlines have reported to cancel a number of their East African flights today :
Lufthansa
Ethiopian Airlines
Turkish Airlines
Fly Dubai
Kenya Airways
Emirates

UPDATE 16/06 – 07:41 UTC : The activity of the volcano picked up again. The Sat24 infrared animated satellite series is showing a far lengthier ash plume than yesterday. VAAC (Volcano ash advisory) has also increased the area which is contaminated with the ash cloud. Click here to see the ash maps (06:00 UTC bulletin).

UPDATE 15/06 – 23:31 UTC : Another compilation of the NASA MODUS HD satellite image as a layer on Google earth (with thanks to Martin Rey for the tips – see his instructions below to do it yourself)

Afbeelding

UPDATE 15/06 – 22:35 UTC : VAAC Ash advisory bulletin at 18:00 UTC

UPDATE 15/06 – 21:31 UTC : Below the MODIS – - NASA picture as distributed taken on June 13, 1 day after the explosion – By using the highest definition, we were able to show the violent action much better than in most other sites . The picture is indeed a high resolution picture, but as said in the update below, satellite photography can show us much better details from the caldera. The present state of the eruption is a lot less intensive and might come up with more details.

Afbeelding

UPDATE 15/06 – 20:28 UTC : When will the HD-satellite images be released from the current eruption ? Why are we making this remark ? We are almost sure that the satellite companies like NASA and EUMETSAT, to name a few, will be able to show us visual and infrared HD-pictures from the crater area. The Cnes SpotImages from Google earth are revealing almost every detail of the crater. If an identical image from the current state of the volcano would be published, it would certainly reveal what really happened. Unfortunately we have no other means of information at the moment. The MODIS picture showing the ash plume on June 13 was of a far too inferior quality.
If such HD-images do exist, can they please be published in the open Internet. If they do not exist, we hope that the satellite companies will do their best to make them soon, as they will be invaluable for science. Earthquake-report and their thousands of users will be very grateful to them.

UPDATE 15/06 – 16:14 UTC : This is the statement of Ethiopian Airlines earlier today :
The volcanic ash cloud in the Northern part of Ethiopia is clearing. Therefore, Ethiopian flights to Djibouti will resume today June 15, 2011. Flights to Khartoum and some destinations to the Northern part of Ethiopia are still suspended. We request all our passengers to call their nearest Ethiopian offices to coordinate their travel plans using the following contact addresses.

UPDATE 15/06 – 14:21 UTC : The composition of the volcano cloud is containing a lot less ash than in the early hours.

UPDATE 15/06 – 14:11 UTC : Press reports out of Djibouti are confirming our earlier information that the air space above Djibouti was closed on Tuesday. The smoke consists of fine particles of ash. The cloud has forced officials of Ethiopian Airlines to cancel flights to Djibouti, to the north of Ethiopia and to Khartoum, the Sudanese capital on Tuesday.

UPDATE 15/06 – 13:57 UTC : On the animated satellite picture one can see a faint ash cloud blowing to the west. Reading the new VAAC bulletin at 12:00 UTC, we can see that the lower cloud (20,000 feet) will perturb probably all air-traffic to Djibouti.
Latest Ash Advisory bulletin (12 AM UTC) - Recent animated satellite picture

UPDATE 15/06 – 08:28 UTC : We have changed the title into “still NO news from the Nabro area after more than 2 days!” to express our sadness that after more than 2 days nobody in the world can give us a precise picture on what exactly happened at the moment of the explosion / eruption. The bulletin from the Eritrean government only stating some generalities is far from satisfying. We do experience here an eruption of a historic volcano, which should be world news, but we can only assume that the location of the volcano is one of the reasons.

UPDATE 15/06 – 07:15 UTC : As we have still NO information from the ground, we continue to work with the satellite weather images and with the Ash advisory bulletins. Based on both, we see a strong decrease in activity.
Latest Ash Advisory bulletin ( 15/06 – 6 AM) - Recent animated satellite picture

UPDATE 15/06 – 07:10 UTC : Dawid Wolde reports from Djibouti : Stuck in Djibouti with all flights out of Djibouti canceled, we decided to drive to Lac Assal, a salt lake about 125 kms north of Djibouti city and considered to be the lowest point in Africa at 153 meters below sea level. We saw the ash cloud, the sun was completely blocked and we could not see the sea because of the ash.

UPDATE 14/06 – 21:11 UTC : Updated Ash advisory update from VAAC Toulouse at 18:00 UTC. Click here to see the latest Ash Advisory bulletin. Ash cloud near the volcano has decreased to 20,000 feet (6,096 m)

UPDATE 14/06 – 19:50 UTC : Ethiopian Air Lines has canceled today flights to Khartoum, Djibouti and Northern Ethiopia. the Exc. Director told the media that the ash cloud is approaching Addis Ababa in low altitude. The airline is forced to change route directions to Europe and Asia (report from Beni Yebi from Nazareth, Ethiopia).

UPDATE 14/06 – 19:43 UTC : The Eumetsat weather satellite RGB short movie sequence of the eruption on June 13 (thanks to Witold). Video copyright 2011 EUMETSAT

UPDATE 14/06 – 16:11 UTC : A reader from Gondar Ethiopia wrote the following comment a few moments ago. We like his remark at the end :) :
Stranded in Gondar today…one of those domestic flights that got canceled. Thanks for all the updates. This website is amazing, and I couldn’t agree more about the terrible coverage on this eruption. The lack of news is really an undertone of how much the giant media conglomerates care about anything truly news-worthy. I do, however, know what Paris Hilton had for lunch yesterday, so there’s that…

UPDATE 14/06 – 15:44 UTC : May we kindly ask some cooperation from the scientific community here. Sharing the information they have collected in the open Internet would serve everybody in the world. There is a lot more to say about this eruption and similar eruptions in the area. Which volcanologists or geologists have reasonable resolution pictures from the Nabro volcano they want to share with the open Internet.

UPDATE 14/06 – 15:34 UTC : Almost 2 days after the explosion of the volcano, we are still without any in-depth news and/or pictures from the eruption of the Nabro volcano. Maybe Mrs Clinton has seen the eruption from the air and could send us some pictures. The eruption did increase a little bit like reported by reader Guigui (see comments). Click here to see the current infrared image.

UPDATE 14/06 – 15:24 UTC : Updated Ash advisory update from VAAC Toulouse at 12:00 UTC. Click here to see the latest Ash Advisory bulletin.

UPDATE 14/06 – 12:03 UTC : Based on the data from VAAC (Volcanic Ash advisory) we can clearly see that the eruption in winding down. There is some remaining activity as ash clouds are still blown in the atmosphere until an altitude of 20,000 feet (6,096 m). Compared to the pictures below the ash plume is much more dispersed and shorter in length. Click here for the Sat24.com dynamic infrared picture

UPDATE 14/06 – 12:01 UTC : New Ash advisory update from VAAC Toulouse at 10:00 UTC. Click here to see the latest Ash Advisory bulletin.

UPDATE 14/06 – 08:03 UTC : New Ash advisory update from VAAC Toulouse. Click here or on the picture below. We can only tell that the ash cloud is extending over the Middle East, later today and tomorrow even in Eurasia. The eruption is following this update still going on at full force (cloud altitude). This update was generated 2 hours ago.

Etc. Etc.

This is part 3 of the Nabro volcano eruption reporting. Nabro is an Eritrean volcano with NO historic eruption record. Day 6 and later were used to follow the eruption pattern (by NASA satellite images) and to continue pressuring both Eritrean and Ethiopian governments to report on the implications (damage and casualties). On Wednesday we were able to republish a portion of the TV news bulletin from Eri.TV, the Eritrean National TV station (others are not allowed). Only after 10 days became clear that 7 people were killed in Eritrea alone. After 10 days NO news yet out of Ethiopia.
Our video reporter / assembler Robert Speta has made a video based on the content of this article for those who do not like to read. Click here to watch it in our “Quake-TV.org” subsite.

To read the full story as it happened, we advise our readers to start at the bottom of the page (earthquake data) and to continue going up. It will read as a written movie of the events.

UPDATE 24/06 – 15:00 UTC : Besides a new Modis Terra satellite image from earlier today showing again very strong activity, no other news could be found. No pictures, no reports from scientists (unless they keep it secret), no reports from the governments, …….. We still have a hard time understanding it !

UPDATE 23/06 – 11:51 UTC : An exiled Eritrean opposition group on Wednesday called on the international community to immediately act to provide urgent assistance to the thousands of Eritreans it said are affected by the Narbo volcano that erupted over a week ago in the country’s south. Remark Earthquake-Report.com : Besides the Eritrean government who at least published a number of press releases, we could not trace 1 single report from the Ethiopian government which describes the health of their own people. Most of the toxic gases and the ash have been blowing for 97% into Ethiopia.

UPDATE 23/06 – 11:35 UTC : Our analysis tool reveals that many Ethiopians are reading this page. May we ask them to let us know if Ethiopian Amharic media have covered this eruption and if they have talked about eventual damage and/or casualties. Every information is welcome.

UPDATE 23/06 – 11:35 UTC : The activity of the volcano increase a lot the last 24 hours. The activity can well be seen on the Modis Terra real color picture taken this morning UTC. The seemingly SO2 rich eruption cloud blows at least 100 km into Ethiopia in his most concentrated form.

UPDATE 22/06 – 21:48 UTC : New press release from the Eritrean government.

Asmara, 22 June 2011 – The Eritrean government is extending the necessary care and assistance through relocating to safe place for nationals displaced due to earthquake and volcanic eruption that occurred in southern and southwestern parts of Southern Red Sea region on the 12th and 14th of June.
The regional Administration disclosed that the Government is working diligently in moving the nationals to safe place in view of the fact that new landscape is being formed due to the eruption resulting in the melting of rock, in addition to possible health problem due to emission of smoke and dust. The situation is now being stable, it added.
The nationals relocated to safe place said that although there previously existed average earthquakes in the area, this year’s incident was quite strange that evolved into volcanic eruption and the melting of rocks. In this respect, they expressed appreciation to the emergency assistance being provided by the people and that the Government in rescuing their lives and cattle from the natural disaster.
Reports indicated that as a result of the disaster, flow of lava with width up to 1,000 meters and height of 15 meters surfaced in Seriru, southern Denkalia, that destroyed vegetation on about 20 kilometers. As a result of the molting of rocks and the covering up of streams, new landscape is being witnessed.
It is to be recalled that the first volcanic eruption that occurred around Seriru in the extreme south of Southern Red Sea region on June 12 caused 5.7 rector scale earth tremor. The eruption also gave rise to dust that covered hundreds of kilometers and that the tremor was heard in the greater portion of the region, according to reports.

UPDATE 22/06 – 13:18 UTC : Chris Rowan from the website “Highly Allochthonous” wrote a very interesting article explaining the seismic activity which preceded the eruption. We advise people who want to find out what happened to click on the link.

Seismo-volcanism in Eritrea
The Great Rift Valley marks where East Africa is slowly attempting to break away from the rest of the African continent, at a rate of less than a centimeter a year. At the north-eastern end of the rift, where it links to the oceanic spreading centers in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, it has come very close to succeeding, producing the Afar triangle. Low, hot and arid, and home to numerous volcanoes and ultra-saline lakes, it’s the closest thing we have to an onland oceanic spreading center – a structure that is normally found beneath 4 kilometers of water. Read more here.

UPDATE 22/06 – 10:43 UTC : The video footage is part of the entire news of Eritrean TV (Eri.TV) which has been been rebroadcast by EastAfro.com. The credits for these videos are with both broadcasters. Earthquake-Report.com wants to thank them for the long awaited video footage. We have replaced the initial video without audio with the new ones. May we ask some of our readers who understand Amharic Tigre, for a translation of the audio thus enabling us to share it with our international readers.

UPDATE 22/06 – 07:31 UTC : The Ministry of information of Eritrea has given a few more details on the eruption of the Nabro volcano near the Ethiopian border. Their press release as it was published. (with thanks to reader Bricmont for mentioning)

Press release from the Eritrean Government
The powerful volcano that erupted in the Southern Red Sea region has created a new landmass, according to the director general of Mines at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Mr. Alem Kibreab. Mr. Alem said that the volcano spewing ash and lava has created a new land mass measuring hundreds of square metres.
Mr. Alem also pointed out that the eruption in Sireru has spewed smoke and ash that has affected our region.
The director general also disclosed that a team composed of geological and volcanic experts is conducting studies in the area.
Meanwhile, according to reports, 7 people have died while 3 people have sustained injuries due to the eruption.
The inhabitants of the area have been moved to safer locations while at the same time they’re given basic provisions.
According to data, a similar volcanic eruption in Eritrea occurred in 1861, in Dubbi, Southern Denkel.

Remark Earthquake-Report.com : The press release is very general and the name of the Nabro volcano isn’t even mentioned. We are happy however that a “team composed of geological and volcanic experts is conducting studies in the area”.
One of our main concerns is the situation at the Ethiopian side of the border. In examining the pictures from the very beginning until days after, one can see very well that the wind has blown all ash and poisonous gas into Ethiopia. We still have NO official statement from the Ethiopian government on the situation of the villages closest to the volcano.

UPDATE 22/06 – 07:14 UTC : The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) aboard the Terra satellite observed Nabro on the evening of June 19, 2011. Hot areas are bright, and cold areas are dark. The thermal infrared data were combined with a shaded relief image to show the terrain. The white feature exending to the northwest from Nabro is an active lava flow. A high-altitude plume, likely rich in water vapor, is nearly black, and obscures the erupting vents. A diffuse, ash-rich plume to the southwest of Nabro appears purple. (Text and image courtesy earthobservatory.nasa.gov)
The lava flow on the image has an approx. lenth of 12 km (ER)

UPDATE 21/06 – 22:14 UTC : The eruption continues the same way as the last couple of days. Still NO news from the ground (except the article from the BBC from yesterday – see link below). Still NO new facts from the Ethiopian press (most of the ash came down in Ethiopia). Still NO images or videos from the current situation. Still NO assessment reports from the Aid Organizations.

UPDATE 21/06 – 10:33 UTC : a report just coming in from Eritrea
As for Eritrea there are no independent local journalists or foreign correspondents allowed in the country – so no coverage of the eruption in the media.
There were some brief shots on local tv.
International agencies (UN, NGOs) are not allowed to leave the capital, independent assessments of the situation of the people in the area or relocated by the Authorities not possible nor available.
For that reason I think your website should not call upon UN but upon the local authorities to provide insight in the situation of the peoples affected (estimated at 2500) and ask for international support if needed.

UPDATE 20/06 – 22:14 UTC : Although the major eruption took place in Nabro, there were small eruptions in Afambo and Sireru areas as well (source Addis Fortune).

UPDATE 20/06 – 20:02 UTC : Addis Fortune, an Ethiopian newspaper wrote a very good article on the subject. An excerpt :
Volcanic ash from a remote area in Eritrea reaches Ethiopian skies causing not only confusion and fear, but also contaminating the air with sulphur dioxide in the areas closest to the site of eruption.
The type of eruption that took place is an explosive eruption forming a pipeline structure producing different toxic gases, such as sulphur dioxide (SO2), said Gezahegn. It spewed fine volcanic ash 13km up into the atmosphere, above even the clouds.
Link to the full article.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 20/06 – 19:39 UTC : A BBC article as mentioned a number of times in the comments is citing aid workers in the border area that AID is urgently needed. The local communities need food, water and other life survival material.
We call the UNITED NATIONS to ACT IMMEDIATELY and to use diplomatic pressure towards both governments, so that aid can be allowed in the area or to evacuate the people living near the volcano. The cry for help from people getting sick in the area is mainly originated by the large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas emitted by the volcano.
Based on our extensive following of the initial earthquakes and the following eruptions, we are convinced that this aid is necessary in BOTH countries.
Earthquake-Report.com remark : Why is BBC still talking about the DUBBI volcano instead of NABRO volcano?.

UPDATE 20/06 – 15:53 UTC : “According to NASA, the volcano spewed ash and large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas—the highest levels ever detected from space“.

UPDATE 20/06 – 09:36 UTC : The University of Wisconsin-Madison / Space and Engineering Center did a great job in mounting several outer space satellite pictures together to show the eruption from outer space. A sequence of EUMETSAT Meteosat-9 7.35 µm “water vapor channel” images (below; click image to play animation) was useful for following the leading edge of the volcanic plume (the volcano summit is circled on the first few images of the animation). Click here for the link to the University website and the original document.
Interesting to follow is how the first ash cloud travelled over the Middle-East on to Russia.

UPDATE 20/06 – 09:01 UTC : Almost no change in activity the preceding hours.

UPDATE 19/06 – 21:36 UTC : According to NASA, the volcano spewed ash and large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas—the highest levels ever detected from space, according to preliminary estimates from researchers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
Nabro is part of larger double-caldera structure with the Mallahle volcano to the southwest. Both volcanoes were built, like Kilimanjaro, from trachyte lavas, and later filled by eruptions of ignimibrite. Research suggests that both calderas may have formed around the same time. The volcanic range has been “virtually undocumented,” according to researchers.

UPDATE 19/06 – 18:30 UTC : The OGA page reveals that some minor Nabro seismic activity started already in May.

Iceland's Hekla volcano 'ready to erupt': geophysicist

REYKJAVIK - ONE of Iceland's most feared volcanoes, Hekla, looks ready to erupt, with measurement instruments showing likely magma movement, an Icelandic geophysicist said on Wednesday.

The volcano is close to the ash-spewing Eyjafjoell, which last year caused the world's biggest airspace shut down since World War II, affecting more than 100,000 flights and eight million passengers.

The Iceland Civil Protection Authority said it was closely monitoring the situation.

'The movements around Hekla have been unusual in the last two to three days,' University of Iceland expert Pall Einarsson said. 'While this might not necessarily mean an immediate blast, 'the volcano is ready to erupt,' he stressed.

The volcano, dubbed by Icelanders in the Middle Ages as the 'Gateway to Hell,' is one of Iceland's most active, having erupted some 20 times over the past millennium, most recently on February 26, 2000.

It measures 1,491m and is located about 110km east of Reykjavik, not far from Eyjafjoell. -- AFP
