More than 33,000 people are fleeing a sudden volcano eruption in Guatemala City.

Guatemalan emergency officials say the evacuees are leaving 17 villages around the Volcano of Fire, which sits 10 miles (16km) from the city of Antigua.

The volcano is almost always active at a low level and smoke can often be seen billowing from its crater, but large eruptions are rare.

Seismologists say explosions have also been coming from the 12,346ft-high (3,763m-high) volcano and lava has spewed 2,000ft (600m) down its slopes.

Thick clouds of ash can be seen billowing nearly two miles (3km) into the sky and rumblings were heard for several miles around.

Gustavo Chicna, a volcanologist with the National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology, said: "A paroxysm of an eruption is taking place, a great volcanic eruption, with strong explosions and columns of ash."

He added that the cinders spewing from the volcano were settling half an inch thick in many places and that extremely hot gases coming from the volcano, which was wreathed in ash and smoke.

The Sakurajima Volcano, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, erupted on Sunday sending plumes of ash thousands of feet into the air, in what is being called it’s largest eruption in decades. Reports state that the smoke plume eventually reached a height of 5,000 meters (approximately 16,000 feet), according to the Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory.

The nearest possibly active volcanic system is the Monti Albani, which lies 12 miles south-east of Rome, although its last known activity took place around 20,000 years ago.[/quote]

van dezelfde site over recente 'geiser' bij vliegveld rome:

August 26, 2013 – ROME, Italy – Italian experts have been puzzled by the overnight appearance of what looks like a volcanic geyser erupting steam and gases 5 meters into the air. What appears to be a new fumarole appeared near Rome’s International Fiumicino airport Saturday morning. A vent producing small geyser-like fountains of steam, water and mud was suddenly opened in the ground near a road crossing near Fiumicino. Geologists are currently examining the phenomenon. It is still a bit unclear whether it is not a man-made accident caused by a broken pipe or similar (which might well be the case). As La Repubblica statess, first inspections however indicate that it is in fact a new natural vent. Obviously, there are also already some speculations whether it could be related to volcanic activity. The nearest possibly still active volcanic system in the area is the Monti Albani, an old but possibly not yet extinct volcanic complex located 20 km SE of the capital. Its last known activity there took place about 20,000 years ago. New volcanic activity in the suburban area of Rome itself is certainly not a completely impossible, but quite unlikely scenario. More data will be needed to shed light on this. “From Mt. Etna in Sicily up to the Alban hills around Rome, there is a good deal of volcanic activity,” Alberto Basilli, a seismologist at the Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology told the Daily Telegraph.

Indonesia's Sinabung, Merapi volcanoes erupt

Two volcanoes erupted on Monday in Indonesia, prompting warnings for flights and evacuation preparations, officials said.

Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province unleashed volcanic ash as high as 8,000 meters (26,250 feet), the highest of its eruptions in recent days, said government volcano expert Surono.

The 2,600-meter (8,530-foot)-high mountain has sporadically erupted since September after being dormant for three years.

Officials raised the alert status of Sinabung to the second-highest level after an eruption early this month, prompting evacuation of more than 6,000 villagers near its slopes. Its activities have continued since then, sometimes unleashing lava down the slopes.

Blue Fire - Ijen vulcan's crater

Gepubliceerd op 13 aug 2013

The Ijen vulcan's crater (located in east Java Island, Indonesia) have a Blue Flame phenomenon, that there are only 2 in the world (the other one is in Iceland), and can be seen only at night. This is liquid sulfur, which has caught fire and burns with an eerie blue flame. Acidic gases emerges from the fumaroles among yellowish chunks of sulfur, and burns liquid sulfur. There, inside the Kawah Ijen crater, a one-kilometer-wide acidic crater lake lies in the middle. Visit planedia.com to see more cool stuff around the world!
