Will the Dead Sea be eaten by sinkholes? Huge chasms are appearing in the region at a rate of one per day

The Dead Sea is drying up at a rate of one meter per year causing sinkholes
There are now over 3,000 sinkholes around the Dead Sea on the Israeli side
This compares to 40 in 1990, with the first sinkhole appearing in the 1980s

The Dead Sea is drying up at an incredible rate leaving huge chasms of empty space in its wake.

These chasms appear in the form of large, devastating sinkholes and are increasing in number throughout the region.

Experts claim they are now forming at a rate of nearly one a day, but have no way of knowing when or how they will show up.

Estimates by Moment magazine suggest that, on the Israeli side alone, there are now over 3,000 sinkholes around the Dead Sea.

This compares to just 40 counted in 1990, with the first sinkhole appearing in the 1980s.

The Dead Sea spans more than 60 miles through Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan. Its waters are 10 times saltier than the northern Atlantic Ocean because it has no outlet. This means that any minerals that flow there, stay there

Sinkhole forces evacuation in Florida
A sinkhole has opened up in the driveway of a home in Florida, forcing the homeowner and neighbours to evacuate

11:55AM GMT 27 Jan 2014
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... orida.html

The hole was discovered outside a house in Holiday, Florida on Sunday morning.

Local fire authorities evacuated the elderly resident of the house, as well as neighbours as a precaution.

Pasco County Fire and Rescue officials said the hole is 20 feet wide and 15 feet deep and does not appear to be growing.

This incident is the latest in a series of sinkholes to open up in Florida. Last year houses were evacuated in Dunedin after a hole opened up in November, and near the same location a man was killed in February when a chasm opened in his bedroom.

An enormous possible sinkhole has swallowed a parking lot near Florida's Legoland.

Police say the hole, which is 30 feet wide and 5 feet deep, opened up in a Winter Haven grocery store's parking lot Thursday morning.

The Publix supermarket is right across the street from the theme park, Tampa's WFTS reports.
There's no structural damage, and buildings near the site are not yet threated, police say.

No injuries have been reported. Geologists are evaluating the hole.

The grocery store will remain open for business, managers say.

New reports on the Louisiana Bayou Corne sinkhole show that it has collapsed into the Aquifer, making this ever expanding sinkhole an issue not just for the residents of Bayou Corne, but for the entire region as polluted water now being flowing through what is normally clean aquifer water.

The video below not only shows the activity being seen, but splits the screen with the local meeting held where officials attempt to explain and answer questions from understandably concerned citizens.

Last flyover, at the start of June 2014, shows the ever expanding collapse area has grown by several acres. New “containment berms” have been built, as the original levee system collapsed.

Now we see breaking news from the Geophysics community in regards to the ongoing earthquake activity at the sinkhole, which is causing further collapse.

Direct quote:

“The point-source equivalent force system describing the motions at the seismic source (called moment tensor) showed similarities to seismic events produced by explosions and active geothermal and volcanic environments. But at the sinkhole, an influx of natural gas rather than hot magma may be responsible for elevating the pore pressure enough to destabilize pre-existing zones of weakness, such as fractures or faults at the edge of the salt dome.”

Sinkholes as Deep as Eight-Story Buildings Form Along Shoreline of the Disappearing Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is disappearing at an alarming rate, leaving behind thousands of sinkholes that are chipping away at the coastline's vibrant and touristy atmosphere.

The Dead Sea - which is actually a lake - is known for being almost 10 times as salty as the ocean and for having the lowest elevation on Earth. However, over the last few decades, the shoreline has become known for sinkholes that appear to just pop up out of nowhere.

More than 3,000 sinkholes exist along the banks of the Dead Sea, ABC News reported. And some of these craters dive 80 feet into the ground - the equivalent of about an eight-story building.

Inskip sinkhole: Geotechnical engineers to use radar to assess camping area stability

The sinkhole claimed 200 metres of beachfront and about 50 metres of a popular campground and swallowed up a caravan, four-wheel drive camper-trailer and tents just after 10:00pm on Saturday.

Park rangers said this morning the sinkhole had grown by around a metre.

No-one was injured, but more than 300 holidaymakers have been forced to leave the area.
